Dear Rutgers Korean Graduate Students Association Members,

The Korea Society invites members of Rutgers Korean Graduate Students Association to our upcoming program, "Anti-Americanism in Democratizing South Korea: A Look Back" on November 5 at 12:00 PM at The Korea Society (950 Third Avenue, 8th Fl, NYC).

David Straub of Stanford University's Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center analyzes anti-US sentiments in Korea during his tenure at the US Embassy in Seoul from 1999 to 2002 in his important new publication, Anti-Americanism in Democratizing South Korea. Straub looks at the implications of troubles in the relationship then, speaks to the strength of today's ties, and addresses implications for the United States' future role on the Peninsula. A book signing follows the discussion.

David Straub was named associate director of the Korean Studies Program (KSP) at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) on July 1, 2008. Straub is currently writing a book on recent U.S.-South Korean relations. An educator and commentator on current Northeast Asian affairs, Straub retired in 2006 from his role as a U.S. Department of State senior foreign service officer after a 30-year career focused on Northeast Asian affairs. He worked over 12 years on Korean affairs, first arriving in Seoul in 1979. Straub served as head of the political section at the U.S. embassy in Seoul from 1999 to 2002 during popular protests against the United States, and he played a key working-level role in the Six-Party Talks on North Korea's nuclear program as the State Department's Korea country desk director from 2002 to 2004. He also served eight years at the U.S. embassy in Japan. His foreign languages are Korean, Japanese, and German.

Registration and light fare will be on offer starting at 11:30 AM, and we would kindly request you to arrive by 12:00 PM to be seated. Please let us know if you would like to attend by emailing us at policy@koreasociety.org.

The Korea Society is happy to discounted price of $5 for students. Please register by writing to 'policy@koreasociety.org' with your name and Rutgers Korean Graduate Students Association as your affiliation to reserve your seats.

Thank you, and we hope you can join us!

Sincerely,

Meredith Ulrich
